Today was a rest day in Salt Lake City, a city of contrasts for me. We are staying in a rather poor area of town and that might have added to the contrasts. Lots of huge square shouldered buildings, churches, temples and office blocks with families and groups of men living rough on the street. I sensed a tension between the LDS side of the town and the entertainment sector which led the latter to perhaps be a bit more outrageous that you might usually expect. Certainly the LDS influence is very strong with lots of charming and well dressed young men and women from around the world willing to stop and explain aspects of the buildings and culture. It was odd though to walk past the car yards for Mercedes, Ferrari and Maserati with families living rough in the streets outside.
Breakfast at our hotel was rather meagre so we went downtown so Diana could find something more suitable for her. Kiwi checked it out too. Seems ok.
Salt Lake City is supposed to have a bad reputation for pedestrian injuries. Here's one way of approaching it. (school road patrol perhaps?)
And this is how you do it.
This took us down Temple West to Temple Square. This is Joseph Smith's patch. (just in case you didn't know, Shirl's dad was Joseph Smith although every one called him Hayden which was his middle name.) This was the square of huge buildings.
I think this was the temple.
Aunt Helen would like this!
Kiwi went to check out what Joe had to say.
Guess there weren't too many sheilas around in those days.
And here he is. Kiwi checked the boots. Seemed ok.
There are some fantastic sculptures in this town. I liked this.
This was stunning but the building was closed.
I then wandered through a shopping centre with lots of statues and fountains. Kiwi liked most of them.
This was a neat interactive fountain. The little spouts came up randomly. The kids loved it and had a great time.
This was a mobile. I tried to get a video but it didn't work too well.
Kiwi was feeling a bit reckless by now.
I am just going to post this photo. I am not going to make any comment at all. Not one. Not even a skerrit of a comment. Just the photo.
We went out for a beer at about 630 and went to the same place as last night - because they have nice beer of course - thinking that we would go on somewhere else for dinner. We didn't. :-). It was so pleasant that we stayed and had the best steaks of our tour.
We will be off oily in the am so,I think this will be it.
